Granville T. Woods, born on April 23, 1856, was an inventor who made key contributions to the development of a telephone transmitter, a trolley wheel, and the multiplex telegraph of which he defeated a lawsuit by Thomas Edison to appropriate his invention.
Often referred to, in many history books, as the “Black Thomas Edison,” with a closer investigation that connotation might be reversed. Born in Columbus, Ohio, Granville T. Woods held various engineering and industrial jobs before establishing a company to develop several electrical apparatuses. Granville registered nèarly 60 patents in his lifetime.
