Ebony Reigns, born Priscilla Opoku-Kwarteng on February 16, 1997, was a popular Ghanaian dancehall and Afrobeat artist. Known for her bold style, distinct voice, and energetic performances, Ebony quickly rose to fame in the Ghanaian music industry..
Ebony was born in Accra, Ghana, and spent her early years in Dansoman, a suburb of Accra. She attended Seven Great Princess Academy in Dansoman before continuing her education at Methodist Girls' High School in Mamfe. However, she dropped out of high school to pursue her passion for music, against her father’s wishes.
Her career took off when she met Bullet (Ricky Nana Agyemang), a member of the Ghanaian music duo Ruff N Smooth. Bullet recognized her talent and took her under his management, signing her to Ruff Town Records/Midas Touch Inc.
Ebony released her first single, "Dancefloor," in 2015, which earned her recognition in the Ghanaian music scene. The song was well-received and got significant airplay. However, it was her 2017 hits like "Kupe," "Poison," and especially "Maame Hw3" that solidified her status as a leading artist in Ghana.
"Maame Hw3" addressed domestic abuse and social issues, showcasing her versatility beyond dancehall and her ability to connect with fans through meaningful lyrics. This song became a national anthem of sorts and won her admiration for tackling social issues in her music.
Ebony was known for her daring fashion choices and confident persona, often facing criticism from conservative sections of Ghanaian society. Despite this, her boldness inspired many young Ghanaian women. Her music blended dancehall, Afropop, and highlife, making her one of the most unique voices in the Ghanaian music scene.
In 2018, she became the first female artist to be posthumously awarded the Artiste of the Year at the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA), a historic recognition of her impact on the industry.
On February 8, 2018, at just 20 years old, Ebony Reigns tragically passed away in a car accident.
