Raphinha Explains the Importance of Bielsa in His Career.
In statements to "MD," Raphinha said: "He is the coach who helped me a lot from the moment I arrived at Leeds. He always demands more and the best possible level. He helped me reach the national team and get to Barça, and without his individual and collective guidance, I might not be here (at Barcelona)."
He added: "In addition to having a playing style that always respects the ball, he demands the highest level possible in training and matches. He is a very important person for me and my career; I will always be indebted to him." This reflects Raphinha’s sentiments about his coach at Leeds, Marcelo Bielsa.
Indeed, Raphinha's relationship with Bielsa was very strong, evident during the recent Copa America, where Uruguay, under Bielsa’s leadership, defeated Brazil in the quarterfinals, showcasing a heartfelt embrace between the two.
Bielsa was the one who signed Raphinha from Rennes in 2020. About their first meeting, the Brazilian recounted: "I was in my first training session with Leeds when he appeared out of nowhere, as he hadn't been there at the beginning of the session. I was standing alone, playing with the ball, when I felt someone push me from behind. I turned and saw him: Bielsa."
He continued: "To be honest, I was nervous. Many people had told me about him, and they were in awe that I would be working with him. I knew he was an important person, yet he was the most humble coach you could work with."
Raphinha added: "He made me feel relaxed immediately, welcomed me, and told me he was there to help me, which he truly did. In the first few months, he would stop training to take me aside and explain where I should move and what decisions I should make. I owe him a lot, and Marcelo always strives to win, no matter who we face or where we play. We never change who we are, and I love that."
